I’m feeling the fall vibes over here! Learn how to create your own fall mantle decor using dried flowers mixed with faux!
As I was perusing Pinterest the other night I literally stopped in my scroll. I came across a pic of the gorgeous DIY fall mantle decor Amber Thrane created. Thank you for inspiring me to create my own fall mantle decor Amber!
I’ve tried many different fall looks over the years. Pumpkins on the mantle, fall garlands, fall flowers in vases etc. But I am loving this floral centerpiece over anything I’ve done! It’s so soft and natural, and I love that it didn’t take very long at all to create.
Tip for creating your own fall mantle decor:
You can mix dried florals you already have, or that you find at your grocery store with faux flowers you might see at a hobby store like Michael’s. Faux flowers can be pricey and let’s face it… sometimes look really, well… faux. 🙂 So I think its a definite hi/lo effect to mix the two… a great example of this is found from the beautiful fall porch Susan designed in my post here.
For this arrangement I only used three stalks of faux flowers. And what’s great about creating your own DIY fall mantle decor is that you can truly customize the colors and vibe to fit with what you have going on in YOUR home! So if you’re feeling more of the mustards and that is what would match the rest of your color scheme then you have the ability to do that! Or if you prefer to stick with soft greens and creamy tones you could do that. The sky’s the limit!
If you have an hour or less you can make this, really.
Here’s what you’ll need to create this fall mantle decor:
+ 6 stalks of pampas grass
+ eucalyptus
+ wheat- find here
+ 3 bunches of faux flowers- find similar hereÂ
+ twigs of your choosing
+ floral wire- I got mine here
+ wire cutters
How to create your own fall mantle decor:
You’re going to want to start with your biggest “focal” pieces first. These are the “anchors” of your arrangement that everything else will compliment if that makes sense. One piece should be on each side facing out. While holding these pieces together in your hand start layering. I laid mine down on the counter while layering, but every now and then I needed to pick it up and hold it out in front of me to get a better feel for how it would look.
Once you decide you like a layer tie on a piece of floral wire in an inconspicuous place to anchor it. Be sure to balance each side- so for example make sure you have equal amounts of red on either side so it looks even.
Tip- remember to add elements that will give it a wild messy vibe. This is what will make it look more natural.
I basically layered and stuffed pieces here and there until I was satisfied with how it looked. Amber created a cool hanging piece for hers, but I still haven’t committed to putting a nail hole above my mantle (ha!) so I wanted to rest mine on top. Well, I didn’t love how it looked once it was just “resting.” It needed to hang to have the right look. So, what’s a girl to do? I found a heavy rock, tied a piece of floral wire around it and connected it to my fall mantle arrangement. The rock anchors the decor to the mantle and allows it to hang over the side just enough to give it the right feel.
I hope this inspired you to create something special for your home! Or at least start getting excited for fall and all the fun that comes with this time of year.
