Just because its getting cooler and darker outside doesn’t mean that you have to give up enjoying your outdoor space just yet. Read on to find some of my top tips for cozy fall outdoor rooms!
Tip 1: Work with texture!
One way to create cozy fall outdoor rooms is to layer in blankets and pillows with lots of texture. I like adding outdoor macrame pillows as seen in my post here. Also, furry blankets, chunky throws, and soft rugs- yes outdoor rugs can be soft!
Tip 2: Use lighting to create cozy fall outdoor rooms
Lighting is everything! And that rings true for both indoors and OUT! In my opinion nothing makes a space feel more cozy than beautiful lighting. You can achieve this in so many ways! I love hanging string lights like these. Also, lanterns, solar lanterns, candles, spotlights and even lamps that are made for the outdoors are all great ways to cozy up your outdoor space for fall.
My top tip 3: heat!

You won’t last long outdoors in the fall and winter months if you don’t have a way to keep warm. Blankets will only get you so far friends! Patio heaters are a great option, but my absolute fav are fire pit tables. We bought ours from Amazon and have been really happy with it. I love getting cozy in front of a fire. The glow it makes creates the perfect ambiance for those cool fall evenings. Plus you can make smores! Bonus!
Tip 4: Curtains
If you really want to make your outdoor space feel like a cozy room you need curtains. I got these pretty light grey ones from Target. They were super inexpensive and when closed they help keep the warmth in and they even help keep you dry when its raining outside. Yes!
Tip 5 for creating cozy fall outdoor rooms: Sound
Most people wouldn’t even think about sound, but it makes a HUGE impact on your cozy vibe. You can also create a relaxing atmosphere with alto or bass chimes. We LOVE ours. Every time the breeze picks up you can hear them in our backyard, and I Iove it! Also, fountains! Not only are they beautiful but there’s nothing quite like the sound of water. Sooo relaxing. And outdoor speakers. Everyone needs outdoor speakers- there’s nothing like enjoying your favorite playlist outside in front of the fire. I recommend Sonos- we love ours, and now they make outdoor speakers!
Don’t forget about the power of the rocker: Tip 6
Rocking is crucial to relaxing in my opinion. Swings, chairs, gliders- whatever you fancy! Just picture yourself curled up under a big blanket with a good book in front of the fire. Magic.
Tip 7: Plants!
Plants fill in the gaps. And by that I mean they really add personality to your space, and keep it from feeling generic and sterile. Its amazing how popping in plants in different heights and colors can dramatically change the vibe of your outdoor room. I’m slowly filling in the area between the back of my couches and the wall with tall plants. I want to create a barrier in front of the wall for safety reasons, and I love the idea of being surrounded by greenery instead of stucco. Ha!
