Find out how easy it is to paint your own birdhouse and get inspired with these fun DIY ideas!
Why BirdHouses?
Why I’m so glad you asked that question! This was inspired because the weather outside felt sunny and warm. We get a “May Gray” and a “June Gloom” here in Santa Barbara. My daughter’s last weeks of preschool spread into July, and by then the weather felt very, well happy! I happened to have some birdhouses left over from a birthday party craft activity. At the time I was always looking for a fun craft to do with my littles. Now that I have three I must admit I do these sorts of things a lot less! Ha! We gifted these to our preschool teachers as an end of year gift. For more ideas for homemade gifts for a teacher checkout this post HERE!

Paint your own birdhouse and decorate it using things you already have.
So this is another example of using something you may already have around your home. We just used scrap paper for the roofs and picked a matching craft paint for the rest of the house. You can use gift wrap, scrapbook paper, card stock and even fabric! I just sprayed the back of the paper with some spray glue (a staple in my craft room!) and once everything was dry (paint included) we painted the entire birdhouse with a protective coat of Mod Podge outdoor. I have a special place in my heart for Mod Podge. 😉

Our preschool teachers are the crafty types so they loved this project! It was something a little bright and fun to liven up their garden, and bring a smile to their faces. Plus, it was fun to do with my daughter. If you have an inkling to try this project I’ve attached a free download here.

Step by Step directions:
Materials needed to paint your own birdhouse:
Wooden Bird House (I recommend 5-7inch size) –Amazon has a bundle of them with prime shipping here!
Paintbrushes (one for paint and one for Mod Podge)
Cardstock, and/or Fabric, Gift Wrap
Spray Glue- I love this one!
DIRECTIONS:
Step 1: Measure or Trace then Cut
This project will be exponentially easier if you pick houses with straight more angular roofs instead of rounded, curvy ones. Lay your paper of choice on top of your birdhouse roof. You can fold a crease at the end of the roof line. Take your scissors and cut off the excess. A sharp craft knife will also help make cleaner, more precise edges. You can even lay the roof down onto the backside of your paper and trace the outline! This will help especially if you decide to wrap the edges. Cut out and then you’re ready to attach.
Step 2: Glue and Attach Your Roof
Use your spray glue to spray an even amount of glue to the back of your cut paper. Attach it to your roof line and edges.
Step 3: Paint!
Paint one coat onto your birdhouse. Allow it to dry for at least one hour then apply a second coat making sure there are no streaks.
Step 4: Apply Protective Mod Podge Outdoor
Since this is a birdhouse ideally it will be placed outside. We want these to be as protected as they can from the elements. So a great product to apply to protect the paper and brightness of your paint is Modpodge Outdoor. Using a paint brush you can apply this to your dry birdhouse.
Once it’s completely dry you’re ready to make someone’s day!
