Halloween is just around the corner! If you’re a family of five looking for fun Halloween costume ideas check out what we’ve done the last few years!
You guys, we love to dress up for Halloween! Do you? Are you stressed even thinking about Halloween, and how to coordinate everyone? Well you’re not alone! Many people don’t even bother cause it can be a lot of work to figure out what to do… much less for a family of five! Yet somehow we manage to nail it each year. So as long as our kids are willing we’ll be rockin’ a family theme. Read on to see some of our favorite Halloween costume ideas that we’ve pulled off with a family of five.
*warning! some of these photos are really old so please forgive the quality of the images. 😉
Nemo & Dory Costume Idea:
Goin waaaay back here! When my oldest daughter was little she was OBSESSED with the Nemo movie. She couldn’t get enough! So as a result, I ordered knit Nemo & Dory fish beanies from Etsy, and made DIY costumes for the girls. I wrapped pieces of tulle around a strip of elastic for the skirts. Then I sewed ribbon onto long sleeve shirts, and made fins out of flowy fabric sewn onto the outside edges of the sleeves. We borrowed the wetsuits! This was our very first family Halloween costume!
Family of Five Halloween Costume Idea: Chickens!

Ok so we had to do a little DIY to turn dad into a rooster 😉
Everly with her cousin, one of my favorite pics ever.
Okay so the next year there was a shark attack!
Dad’s shark costume can be found here. And kids shark costumes can be found here.
I can’t handle kids in animal costumes. Gets me every time!
And our family of five Halloween costume the next year… Vampires!
One of our daughters wanted to be a bat so bad so this was our compromise! I got the bat wings and masks on Etsy. You can find them here.
On to the next family Halloween costume idea… Wizard of Oz
I really wouldn’t take no for an answer on this one and I’m so glad I did! The dog was the scarecrow. 😉
I can’t begin to tell you how fun it was being Glinda the Good Witch! My mother-in-law spray painted this DIY Glinda gown for me! It was a Jessica McLintock wedding gown she bought years ago for a Halloween costume. Who knew you can literally spray paint a dress?! DIY at its finest I tell ya! How do we have the energy to do all of this with a family of five? Check out some of my mom hacks here.

Find a similar puppy in a basket here. 😉
This was my most favorite family Halloween costume theme we’ve done.
Last year’s family costume theme… SPACE!
There was a ton of DIY here too. We actually got lucky and purchased the handmade paper mache planet costume, my silver paper pleated skirt & Pen’s alien vest. These were sold at my daughter’s theater company’s costume sale fundraiser. This family Halloween costume theme was also super fun! My youngest daughter’s are space girls and their space guns even lit up and made fun sounds. They loved them! Find their costumes here and space ray guns here. And Pen’s alien headband can be found here.
It’s a busy job saving the universe but I got this. Wig found here.
Not today you Alien!
I hope you found some inspiration for your family Halloween costume ideas! Or at least got excited about Halloween! The biggest decision is finding a theme or idea. After that you just gotta put the pieces together. Halloween is so silly and fun. I hope you enjoy yours!
