This DIY lace crown headband is so sweet and dainty. Its an adorable accessory for the girliest of birthday girls!
For my youngest daughter’s first birthday I wanted to make something for her she could save. A keepsake. This lace crown headband was super easy, and even if you don’t sew you can make this! It also makes a great gift for a friend’s new baby. It’s perfect for a newborn photo shoot, a first communion, first birthday or keepsake.
Since not everyone sews or has access to a sewing machine, I will include an option for a non-sew version as well.
DIY LACE CROWN HEADBAND TUTORIAL
Materials:
Fabric tape measure
Elastic
Crown lace
Cream or white thread
Pins
Sewing Machine or Hot glue gun
Pink or colored ribbon of your choice
Scissors
Glass bottle or vase with thin neck
Instructions:
STEP 1: MEASURE THEN CUT!
Measure your baby’s head with a fabric tape measure
Roll out elastic and cut the elastic one inch shorter than baby’s head measurements. This way the elastic will stretch and not be too loose.
STEP 2: CREATE YOUR STRETCHY HEADBAND
Pin the bottom two ends together. Here you can either sew the ends back and forth a few times with your sewing machine, or if it’s easier sew it by hand.
Orrrrr…. If you’re hot gluing you can run one strip of glue along the end of your elastic and carefully hold and press the other end down so it hardens.
STEP 4: MEASURE THEN CUT YOUR CROWN
For the lace crown you will want to roll out your lace and measure how big you would like the crown to be. Once you have decided on the size with very sharp scissors carefully cut your lace.
STEP 5: GLUE YOUR CROWN TOGETHER
Line up the two ends of the lace and carefully overlap. Line one edge with hot glue and glue down to the other edge of lace. Carefully press together and allow to set for a few minutes.
STEP 6: HARDEN THE LACE
Once the glue has hardened completely you can stiffen the lace. Pour enough fabric stiffener into a bowl so that the crown can be fully submerged. Let it soak for several minutes then take it out and use a glass bottle to mold your lace crown. The crown will be very wet. You can let it dry overnight or dry it with a blowdryer. If it has a mold like a wine bottle neck or skinny vase or something similar it will keep its round shape and dry better.
STEP 7: ATTACH YOUR LACE CROWN TO THE HEADBAND
Once its dry you are now ready to attach it to the headband you made! You can hot glue a bottom portion of the lace crown to the elastic headband. Directly across where you just glued your crown glue the other side down. You can also lay the crown flat and sew the lace to the elastic. This will definitely be more secure. Repeat this step on the other side.
STEP 8: ALL DONE! OR ADORN!
Now you’ve got a super cute adorable handmade lace birthday crown! For extra cute points you can tie a little bow and glue that on as an accessory or glue any little accessory down like a jewel or flowers etc. I personally love a simple dainty look for this crown but the fun part of making something yourself is making it how you like it! These crowns also make great baby gifts, they’re so cute for a photo shoot and birthday gifts! You could easily make a few at a time.
