Garage Renovation DIY- Make It Beautiful

I’ve accepted a challenge to take my garage from drab to fab! Check out the progress, and my tips so you can DIY your own garage renovation!

The texture and colors on these vases are what inspired the painted stenciled backsplash I’m going to paint.

I’ve done a crazy thing. I joined the oneroomchallenge. Know what this is? It’s a challenge sponsored by Better Homes & Gardens where a team of designers & guest participants get a chance to showcase the rooms that they are renovating. The catch is the rooms must be finished in just 8 short weeks. Yikes! But… there’s nothing like a deadline to kick my butt into gear! Anyone else relate?! I knew I needed to do a garage renovation so this was the perfect time to bite the bullet and FINISH a room for once! So today is a first in a series I’d like to call… “My Garage Renovation”- so this is part 1 I guess? 😉

If you came here from the ORC site, hello! I’m Laurie. A home decor enthusiast and mom of three girls who believes in embracing life FULLY! We recently purchased a home on a ranch in the foothills of southern California and have spent the last year slowly fixing it up!

How do I make my garage beautiful?

Anita Yokota did it best. What she created in her garage is just to die for!
This is also a great example of using wallpaper for an accent wall.

I asked myself this question because of the fact that the laundry is in the garage. I have three kids so I do a LOT of laundry. And, like most people we want our workspace to also function as a beautiful space. Also, living in southern California means pretty mild weather year round. There’s a lot of people who like to renovate their garage into a multi-use room. I mean, why use (waste) all that space just for your cars… am I right?! 😉

What I plan to do to renovate my garage and make it into a beautiful space.

I love this cute the way this designer added legs to IKEA storage to elevate a shoe bench. I plan to do something like this over by the entry door to create it a mudroom nook. Image via Ruggable.
PINSPIRATION indeed! Rattan cabinetry is so beautiful. This is a great example of how wood and natural materials can really warm up a space. I made sure to buy cabinet doors that have a recess to them. We will see if I can duplicate this look with my DIY plans! See this entire makeover over on houzz

I originally had the dryers stacked, but once we moved the direction of the steps and railing, and took out the water softener, we gained a bunch of space. This allowed me to separate the dryers and have a counter built over them providing tons of room for folding clothes! There will be cabinetry and shelves above, complete with a rod for hanging clothes to dry. I will also add a cute runner to lay in front of the machines. Gotta be cozy while folding right?!
This is what my plans looked like before we started. Imagine a sofa under the window with curtains, and the window trim painted black. Wires gone and new fresh white walls. White cabinetry to the right and a bench with hooks to the left (mudroom entry) over by the door! Oh and a ceiling fan!
Here is the other side of my garage. We will drywall and paint and add slat storage to the left of the window. (There isn’t any room for cabinetry on this side if we want to park a car in here). I also found a folding counter to put under this window. Two stools will be tucked underneath creating a fun art zone. Lots of hooks for hanging coats etc will go on the wall to the right of the window.

This is how our Home Depot kitchen cabinets turned out! I wanted to leave room for some counter space. We will put a couch under the window because the garage will also be a place to hangout.
Here is another angle of how those Home Depot kitchen cabinets turned out! These are super affordable. I love having drawers and being able to adjust the height of the shelves.
Here is a progress pic after we removed the water softener and heater. The sink is installed, there is fresh white paint on the walls, cabinets and a counter on top of the dryers! Oh and check out the painted floors. So fresh!
This is the most recent pic I have of our laundry area in the garage. I am currently in the process of stenciling this fun backsplash. We added leather pulls and these shelves from Amazon. I picked these because of the bar underneath. Its the perfect spot for hanging clothes to dry. Those s hooks with clips area also from Amazon. They’re great for holding swim suits, ballet tights, delicates etc. Please ignore my doodle’s booty shot here. 😉 He’s always sneaking into the pics!
